When you open the TikTok application, your news feed these days will be filled with videos on the Israel-Gaza war. Now, suppose there are pro-Israel and pro-Palestine videos coming one after another in your feed.
You watch both videos but leave one video mid-way and finish the other. The TikTok algorithm will identify your choice of video from watching the duration of the videos. Going forward, your feed will have more video suggestions, and the platform will decide which “side” of the loggerheads you have chosen.
This is a dangerous thing to happen when social media have such a deep impact in shaping public opinions. In other words, the algorithm of the platform is pushing more people toward divisive content instead of “authentic” content.
The United Kingdom is witnessing the impact of social media building public views at a major level.
Layla Moran, the Liberal Democrat MP, shared her experience in this account. She said how people in the UK who are not politically active have suddenly found interest in the Israel-Gaza war. The MP’s mother is from Palestine. She and other fellow politicians are receiving messages in huge numbers with requests for the ceasefire. She mentions that this sudden upsurge, especially among young people, is due to the spread of Instagram and TikTok videos through WhatsApp.
She says, “Anything that is too slick, their initial instinct seems to be – don’t trust it. They expect it to be disinformation.”
Andrew Percy, a Conservative MP, also shares the same line of thought. He says,
“Much of the content being shared is problematically antisemitic. That’s been a real problem long before this conflict – and this time, social media has made that happen at speed.”Another social media platform that has long been under the radar of the European Union for spreading fake videos is Elon Musk’s X. There are many reports showing how many official accounts on the platform are spreading fake videos during the Israel-Gaza war.
