Does Instagram Show Screenshots In Stories?

Instagram has never been a widely used social media platform. It allows users to share memorable moments in stories, posts, and reels.

Though it offers certain options for fleeting content in the form of Instagram Stories, Vanish Mode, and direct messages, privacy has never been an option for users. Users have raised several questions: For example, does Instagram show screenshots on stories?

In this sense, we will discuss whether Instagram lets the user know that a story was screenshotted, what happens in other cases during the screenshot process on Instagram, how to take an Instagram screenshot more securely, and how to make the app private.

Does Instagram Show Screenshots On Stories?

Does Instagram Notify When You Screenshot a Story_

A short answer is no; Instagram does not inform you if someone takes a screenshot of your story.

Unlike Snapchat, which alerts you whether a user screenshots their snaps or stories, Instagram does not have a similar feature. So, you can screenshot an Instagram story without the other party ever discovering it.

Instagram doesn’t notify you that you’re being screenshotted, but it once did. In 2018, Instagram rolled this out as an experiment, whereby a notification would be sent whenever a screenshot of their story had been made.

It was implemented in a test on a small segment of users, wherein the screenshot-taker would have a star next to their name in the story view list.

However, the feature was taken down some months later due to countercriticism regarding privacy infringement and user pushback. Since then, Instagram has never brought back any sort of screenshot alert on stories.

When Does Instagram Show Screenshots On Stories?

When Does Instagram Send Notifications for Screenshots_

In certain cases, Instagram sends notifications to a few users, but it does not send notifications for screenshots of their stories. Specifically, these are the instances where Instagram warns about screenshots:

1. Disappearing Photos And Videos In DMs

Disappearing Photos and Videos in DMs

When disappearing photos or videos are sent through Direct Messages (DMs), Instagram informs the recipient whenever the recipient takes a screenshot. This is very similar to Snapchat, which has self-destructing messages.

Suppose Instagram sees you screenshotting a disappearing photo or video in your private chat (and not a normal text or media message). In that case, it will put a small screenshot icon next to your username.

This notification applies only to disappearing messages. That means the other user will not get such an alert if you take a screenshot of a normal chat, photo, or video in DMs (not disappearing).

2. Vanish Mode in DMs

In 2020, Instagram launched Vanish Mode, where messages disappear moments after you leave the chat. The person you send a Vanish Mode message to will be notified that you screenshot it.

  • Just swipe up on the Instagram DM to activate Vanish Mode.
  • Messages automatically delete themselves when you are out of the chat.
  • If you screenshot during Vanish Mode, the sender will receive a notification.

3. Instagram Posts and Notes?

So now, Instagram doesn’t notify you if you screenshot someone’s profile, posts, reels, or IGTV videos.

You can screenshot these in stealth mode and not alert the originating account. Define other ways of saving Instagram without using screenshots.

If you don’t want to capture Instagram content via screenshots, here are other methods to do it:

a. The Save Feature

The app also has a Save function, which allows users to save posts, reels, and IGTV footage for later viewing on Instagram.

Select the bookmark icon at the bottom of the photo or video to save a post. The saved posts now appear in the saved tab of your profile.

b. Save using the Screen Recorder

Or, if you don’t mind using the screenshot method to save a story, use the screen recording method on your mobile device to save a story:

  • iPhone: Access Control Center and tap the record button.
  • Android: Use a built-in screen recorder or 3rd-party software.
  • Note: This will NOT notify Instagram.

c. Screen Recording through an External Device

The second method is capturing screens or screenshots with another device. This technique does not leave fingerprints or screenshot records for Instagram to trace.

4. Third-Party Applications

Some third-party applications allow direct access to download Instagram content; use them cautiously, as such illegal applications are against Instagram’s terms and conditions.

However, there may be no notification that an individual has ever been featured in screenshots within stories. However, the issue of privacy turns out to be bitter for most individuals.

Some of the privacy principles include:

a. Close Friends

You might have a few people who should not see your stories; in such cases, you can use the Close Friends feature, which allows you to post stories to a selected few but not everyone who follows you.

b. Restrict or Block Users

If someone misuses your content, you can easily block or restrict them. Yes, the Restrict feature restricts that person’s interactions and engagement with your profile, while blocking keeps him or her away from your followers.

c. Keep Your Account Private

Going private means only true and original followers can view your posts and stories. It’s probably one of the best methods of tracking who sees what you post.

d. Do Not Share Private Content

Don’t share private materials, pictures, or videos that can be exploited. If needed, regarding privacy, share it in private groups or other private messaging systems.

Final Verdict!

Unlike Snapchat, Instagram just lets users screenshot stories without bothering to inform their creators.

Given this, it is good etiquette for Instagram to notify you of screenshots taken during Vanish Mode or disappearing images and videos sent through DMs. These features aid you and enhance your privacy while on the site.

If such considerations matter to you, take the necessary precautions to keep it private, pick your Close Friends, and be more selective of your posts. Well, now you know the answer to your question: “Does Instagram show screenshots on stories?”

Over the years, knowing about this on Instagram will ensure your safety and security once you log on to the app. Want to get alerted for screenshots of any Instagram story? Drop your comments below!
