Trips to Chernobyl: Myths And Truth
Almost 36 years ago there was the explosion of the reactor at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, which shook the whole world. Even more, this topic remains actual for today and attracts lots of visitors to explore Chernobyl trips.
The Chernobyl disaster is not only an explosion of a reactor but also disinformation and suppression of facts nowadays.
An information vacuum was created by the hands of the Soviet government, people didn’t know what was happening in reality, and therefore could not assess the scale of the danger.
Luckily, today everything is clear and can be proved by evidence and witnesses.
The explosion at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in 1986 dealt a crushing blow to human health. It especially harmed children, liquidators, and those who lived in the contaminated regions. Their thyroid glands absorbed radioactive iodine from the air and food.
The first phase of the decay of iodine begins after 7 days, after two months it decays completely. Hence, there is no threat of thyroid cancer due to the explosion at Chernobyl or trips to Chernobyl for today’s children. Only children born before May-June 1986 were at risk.
The dirtiest areas have absorbed radioactive metals – radioactive cesium-137 and strontium-90. They worked as a fertilizer for vegetables and fruits that grew much larger than normal.
However, the mutant animals, the photos of which are replete with the Internet, have never been seen live. This theory also became the basis for the video game “S. T. A. L. K. E. R .: Shadow of Chernobyl”, created 20 years after the disaster, and in an alternate universe, the explosion caused lifeforms to be transformed into horrible versions of themselves.
In fact, although studies have shown that animals in the exclusion zone had smaller brains, cataracts, tumors, and infertility – there are no three-headed deer or many-eyed squirrels.
After the explosion at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant on the territory of Ukraine, the number of cancer patients, in particular children, has really increased.
However, it cannot be argued that it was the radiation release that became the main reason for this. This statement is more of a myth.
According to statistics, people who live not in the regions affected by the explosion, but where the chemical industry is developed, are much more likely to get cancer. In addition, overwork, unhealthy diets, and delayed check-ups are common reasons for developing cancer.
After the tragedy, it was believed that everyone, without exception, was infected and could infect others. In fact, the liquidators of the accident who were most affected by the radiation were indeed dangerously infected.
However, ordinary residents who were evacuated on time didn’t pose a danger and don’t present it now, since they did not have time to receive a critical dose of radiation. Nowadays people working in the exclusion zone have protective suits, a cm-7m military gas mask, and other measures to prevent them from coming into contact with radioactive dust particles and lower their exposure.
Once this was the most widespread myth. It was sold at a price of 3 rubles and recommended to be consumed by everyone. Still, wine doesn’t remove radiation: it does not have such a superpower.
A lot of you have once thought about ordering trips to Pripyat Ukraine, after seeing thousands of reports, movies, and Instagram pictures on this topic.
Surely you have seen the abandoned amusement park, photographs of Pripyat, and the new sarcophagus over the fourth reactor.
In April 2016, the President of Ukraine issued a decree on the establishment of the Chernobyl Radiation and Environmental Biosphere Reserve in the territories adjacent to the former nuclear power station.
Its main goal is scientific: to study how the flora and fauna changed after the disappearance of man due to an atomic catastrophe. So, nowadays you may be sure that ordering trips to Chernobyl are a completely safe activity, which will give you a plethora of unforgettable emotions and memories!
