More than 730 employees of OpenAI declared an open revolt on Monday, 20th November, after the sacking of the chief executive officer Sam Altman. The firing of the CEO on Friday was controversial, and it made the employees furious. They came up with a “Will Quit” letter and threatened to leave the organization if the entire board did not resign.

The employees even stated that they would join the wing of Microsoft, now led by Sam Altman. The letter says,

The process through which you terminated Sam Altman and removed Greg Brockman from the board has jeopardized all of this work and undermined our mission and company. Your conduct has made it clear you did not have the competence to oversee OpenAI.

Surely the employees are not willing to buy OpenAI’s justification for the controversial removal of Sam Altman. Regarding the removal, OpenAI states, “he was not consistently candid in his communications with the board, hindering its ability to exercise its responsibilities.”

Emmett Shear, the co-founder of Twitch, is going to be the interim CEO. Meanwhile, Sam Altman has joined Microsoft, as confirmed by Satya Nadella, the chief executive officer of Microsoft. Satya stated that Altman and Greg Brockman will head a new advanced AI research team of Microsoft right now. Greg Brockman, the co-founder and former president of OpenAI, was also sacked along with Sam Altman.

Satya Nadella shares the integration of Sam Altman and Greg Brockman into Microsoft, and he also confirms the news of Emmett Shear acting as the interim CEO of OpenAI. Nadella writes on X,

…We look forward to getting to know Emmett Shear and OAI’s new leadership team and working with them. And we’re extremely excited to share the news that Sam Altman and Greg Brockman, together with colleagues, will be joining Microsoft to lead a new advanced AI research team. We look forward to moving quickly to provide them with the resources needed for their success.
