You know what clients still ask me in a kickoff call?
After optimizing content for search and social for over a decade, I still have to answer,
“How many hashtags should I actually use on Instagram?”
I had a staple answer to this. “As many as the platform allows!”
However, as we are close to 2027, this answer is not going to work anymore.
There is no denial that there has been a paradigm shift in how hashtags are being used in Instagram posts or other social media content.
I was just reading the “Are Social Media Hashtags Still Relevant? Here’s How to Use Them” article by the U.S Chamber of Commerce.
Along with sharing the Instagram update limiting the use of 5 hashtags per post, the article also highlights the importance of hashtag customization for each brand.
So, it is not just the numbers. The quality of the hashtags is also important.
Here, I can quote what Later has to say about “Instagram Hashtag Strategy 2026.”
“The strongest hashtag strategy in 2026 uses a deliberate mix of niche community, branded, topic, and format-specific tags chosen for each piece of content individually.”
However, before getting on the quality and customization part of hashtags on Instagram, in this article, I want to get the number game right.

Yes, until another update is rolled out, the hashtag limit on Instagram remains.
It is a lot lower than what it was earlier, and Instagram has quietly slashed its hashtag cap over the past two years.
Where creators once had room for up to 30 hashtags per post, Instagram cut that number down to just 5 hashtags per post as of early 2026.
As a marketing professional, I do not see this as a minor tweak. It is a sixfold reduction.
Also, this reduction is a clear indicator of how the priorities of the platform have shifted.
Two other product signals back this up.
And at the end of 2024, Instagram killed the ability to follow individual hashtags, removing one of the last real discovery use cases hashtags had left.
Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri has said publicly, more than once, that hashtags no longer move the needle on reach the way they used to.
During a Q&A session with media in December 2025, Mosseri said,
“Contrary to popular belief, hashtags are not a way to get more reach.”

Instead of relying on outdated best-practice checklists, I like to point clients to data.
Recently, we did an internal analysis of around 1.4 million posts on Instagram. It was an effort by our team of social media professionals to find out how hashtags correlate with performance in 2026.
Two findings from that dataset stood out to me immediately.
First, most accounts have already given up on hashtags entirely.
| Hashtag usage | Share of posts |
|---|---|
| No Hashtags Used | 49% |
| Maximum (5 Hashtags) | 41% |
| More than 5 (Over the Current Limit) | 10% |
Secondly, using zero hashtags is not the top-performing option. It is the middle ground of 1 to 3 hashtags that actually underperforms.
Looking at reach relative to follower count, the pattern is consistent and, frankly, a little counterintuitive.
| Hashtag Count | Reach Vs. No Hashtag Baseline |
|---|---|
| 0 Hashtags | Baseline |
| 1 to 3 Hashtags | Slightly below Baseline |
| 4 Hashtags | Above Baseline |
| 5 Hashtags | Best Performer |
| 6+ Hashtags | -3%, Lower than the Baseline |
Here is the takeaway I share with my clients.
A thin, half-hearted set of two or three hashtags is worse than not tagging at all, because it does not give Instagram’s algorithm enough signal to categorize the post properly.
Going over the limit dilutes that signal even further.
The same dataset tracked likes and comments per follower against hashtag count, and the shape of the curve is nearly identical to the reach data.
| Hashtag Count | Engagement vs. 0–1 Hashtag Baseline |
|---|---|
| 0–1 hashtags | Baseline |
| 2–3 hashtags | Below baseline |
| 4 hashtags | +1% |
| 5 hashtags | +3% (best performer) |
| 6+ hashtags | Below baseline |
That +3% at 5 hashtags is modest in isolation, but across a full content calendar it compounds.
That is the difference between a strategy that is actively working and one that’s just adding clutter to your caption for no return.

This is where I think many brands or creators go wrong.
It is not just about hitting the 5 hashtag mark.
The composition of that hashtag set is more important. You have to mix hashtag sizes rather than using five similar, same-sized hashtags.
The mix I now recommend to every client is:
| Number of Hashtags | Purpose |
|---|---|
| 2 to 3 Large, High-Reach Hashtags | For Visibility |
| 1 to 2 Medium-Sized Hashtags | For Topical Relevance |
| 1 Niche, Highly Specific Hashtag | For Precise Audience Targeting |
For example, if you are creating a post on social media marketing, you can try this mix.
The large tags get you in front of more people, and the niche tag tells the algorithm exactly who those people should be.
I will be blunt with clients who ask if hashtags are “dead” in 2026.
They are not dead. However, they are no longer a volume game, either. Here is the practical checklist I am running for every account.
Once again, here is a checklist of best practices regarding how many Instagram hashtags should I use on Instagram.
| Best Practices | Importance |
|---|---|
| Stop maxing out the limit by default. | Five hashtags is the ceiling, not the target to hit blindly on every post. |
| Never post 1–3 random hashtags “just in case.” | The data shows this performs worse than skipping hashtags altogether. |
| Build a mix, not a pile. | Combine 2 to 3 broad tags with 1 to 2 medium tags and one niche tag. |
| Treat hashtags as a signal booster, not a content strategy. | Caption keywords, on-screen text, and audience interaction now carry far more algorithmic weight than they did even two years ago. |
| A/B test within your own account. | Industry, audience, and content type all shift what “optimal” looks like. So validate the 4 to 5 hashtag range against your own analytics before locking it in. |
So, in 2027, the right number of hashtags on Instagram is going to be 4 to 5. These have to be deliberately chosen across a range of reach levels.
Furthermore, they cannot be five random tags stuffed in to hit the cap. Also, it cannot be zero out of the idea that “hashtags don’t work anymore.”
They still do. You just have to use fewer, smarter ones.
