As an employer, you are responsible for the happiness of your employees. It’s a tricky line to walk because you want to ensure they see you as a respectable and authoritative figure, but at the same time, they need to be happy in their role and see you as someone who genuinely cares about them.

Work has a big influence on a person’s overall health and wellbeing. If they feel overly stressed and under pressure at work, or if something is bothering them, it will begin to affect every other part of their life. With this in mind, you need to make sure you’re doing all you can to keep your employees happy and content, although this might seem easier said than done.

To help you become a better employer and ensure those who work for you enjoy coming to work, here are some of the ways you can keep your employees happy.

1. Communicate with them regularly

Many employers are guilty of not communicating with their employees regularly enough. Sure, everyone is busy, but if you fail to take the time to talk to your team, it will create a negative discord between you and them.

They might feel as though as they can’t approach you, or that you don’t particularly care about what they’re doing or how they are. Neither of these foster positive working relationships and can create discontentment.

Rather than letting problems build up, make sure you regularly take the time to have a chat with every member of your team. It makes everything feel more personal, and this is key to building trust. Approach these conversations with an open and friendly demeanor, respecting boundaries, pronouns, topics of discussion, etc. A problem that builds up, such as being discriminated against for their gender identity, could end up with unhappy employees, that want to file a case with the help of gender discrimination attorneys. A simple way you can boost happiness amongst employees is to decorate your office in a nice way. Plain white walls, a lack of natural light, no plants, and poor furniture all contribute to unhappiness.

If possible, place your employees close to the windows, consider painting the walls a calming color like blue, and invest in ergonomic furniture that will support their backs and their physical wellbeing.

When you do so, you may notice a distinct change in how your team acts and performs.

3. Allow autonomy

Micromanagement is a fast-track way to make your employees unhappy. No one wants their every move to be watched, questioned, or criticized. At the same time, they also don’t want to be made to feel as though they can’t do their job.

If your team feels this way, they will very quickly spiral into unhappiness, and this will no doubt cause them to seek employment elsewhere.

To prevent your staff from leaving, allow them to show autonomy and trust them to do the job you’ve hired them to do. You’ll find that doing so will result in better output and an improved mood in the office overall.

3. Encourage chatting and bonding

Our final tip to keeping employees happy is to allow them to chat and bond during the workday. For a lot of managers, this is their worst nightmare, but for employees, sitting in silence all day is theirs.

You need your employees to get along and trust each other so that they can do their jobs effectively and work without friction. Of course, they can’t sit and talk all day, but the occasional five-minute chat throughout the day will do no harm and foster a more positive environment.

This, in turn, will have a direct impact on happiness and hopefully mean that your team looks forward to coming to work every day.
